I am not sure which hierarchy you are trying to use; MARA-PRDHA,
MVKE-PRODH, or you have a different one in mind. All hierarchies in SAP are
configurable through OVSV. For instance, the hierarchy PRODH has 18 characters and
can have up to 9 levels, however, the standard in R/3 is only three levels -
if you want more then you have to add them (T179).

The important issue is that all levels of the hierarchy must have an entry,
but it is possible to define ,say, the lowest level as being "00000", etc.
so that effectively you are not using the lowest level. This is not a very
clean way of working and could cause problems if you wish to analyse from
the lowest level, therefore configuration is the better option.

Hierarchies should be treated with care as they can be used in many areas
of SAP. My opinion is that they should be reserved for SD and COPA/BW
requirements related to the commercial areas of pricing conditions and
management reporting. I would attempt to use the planning families as an
alternative. If you are running APO, then the hierarchy in APO is independent of those
in R/3 and has no impact commercially, so this can be configured as you
wish for planning.

If you still wish to use PRDHA or PRODH, then you need to discuss the
implications with the SD and FICO specialists and have an agreed structure.

Subject: Creating a Planning Hierarchy

I'm planning to create a Planning Hierarchy where I'm not going to have the material in the lower level of the hierarchy. However, I was told the just few SAP customers are taking this approach and most of all doe have material at the bottom. I'm concern that my solution could have risks of not functioning because the material MUST be in the lower level.
I hope somebody can share experiences where their hierarchies doesn't have material in the lower level and the business needs to make such decision. Thanks in advance for any support that can be provided.
