KPD, the process for creating a Serial Number record is triggered from a
material process. First you will need to determine at what point in your
process you wish toCreate the unique item that you can then serialize.

Standard SAP serial procedures are:

HUSL Maintain handling unit
MMSL Maintain goods receipt and issue doc.
PIAU Serial numbers in PI order
PIRL PI order release
POSL Serial numbers in purchase orders
PPAU Serial numbers in PP order
PPRL PP order release
PPSF Serial nos in repetitive manufacturing
QMSL Maintain inspection lot
SDAU Serial numbers in SD order
SDCC Completness check for delivery
SDCR Completion check IR delivery
SDLS Maintain delivery
SDRE Maintain returns delivery
SDVC Version Change: SD sales order

You will need to create a Serial Profile, assign the procedures above that
are relevant to your process, determine how the serial number is to be
assigned 01-None, 02-Optional, 03-Obligatory, or 04-Automatic. Obligatory
or optional allow you to enter your own external serial number, can be
alpha-numeric 18 character limit. 04-Automatic creates a sequential
serial number, no number range config required. The last sn issued for
each Material is maintained in table MASE and thus is uniquie for the
material across the client. Finally you need to determine if you want a
full equipment record (02) or just a SN record (01) in equipment.

You then assign this Serial Profile to the materials that you want
serialized by plant. It is possible to have different serial profiles in
different plants as well as for different materials. Ex. You manufacture
a material that you want a SN upon Prod Ord confirmation, but another
material you purchase and you want serialized when you receive the goods.
Each of these materials will have a different Serial Profile.

Subject: Serial numbers and Material Records Pointing to Equipment Serial Numbers

I need the pecking order for creating a Material and entering a manufacturer's serial number from the Equipment master record into the intangible Material record w/ same serial number and then entering the Material number and serial number into the "serdata' tab of the equipment record. What are the sequential steps? I can't find a methodology in aftermarket book or googling on line. Thanks in advance for help. kpd
