Your system sounds like it is set up like ours is. The Schedule Agreement values are ignored during the planning run - we found this out ourselves somewhat the hard way. The controlling values were what was shown in the material master. Once we set those (Like you did) things work like we expected them to. So in other words Scenario#2 will not work for firm time fence planning.

I tried two scenarios. First one is setting MRP type toP1, defining a value to planning time fence and defining on source list. With this scenario everything is okay.

Second scenario I tried is from scheduling agreement. I entered a value as firm zone and trade off zone in scheduling agreement item-additional data screen. I set binding on mrp field to "empyt" description of emprty is "scheduline lines after trade off zone can be changed by mrp". I set mrp type to PD on MRP1. With this settings MRP changes the delivery schedules within firm & trade off zones defined.
With this scenario nothing shown on MD04 indicating firm zone - trade off zone .
