Peter -

In my opinion, you have two options. I don't actually like either one of them.

First, to order an item into a plant, you must have the item extended to that plant. You would need to extend all items to all plants when they are first created, making sure to adjust the planning parameters in the non-stocking plants so that inventory remains at zero until someone changes things.

The alternative method could be that in whichever process would trigger the ordering of an item into a plant where it's not maintained already, custom code is added to extend the item on demand. Since you said that the items need to be available for purchase (I'm assuming by your customer), that would mean that user exits in sales order creation would need to take a time-out from the selling process for a few moments, to extend the material to the desired plant. This would have to take the place of the normal program flow that simply throws an error when a non-maintained plant is entered in the sales order. This method runs the risk of extending items to plants where the sales order never actually gets saved, so you could have lots of extra records without actual sales.

Subject: Entend MM to Purchase

Folks, I have worked with materials within warehouse for some time, so I understand the theory and practice of extending Material Masters to a plant. However, in the current implementation I'm involved with, the client wants to extend all Materials to be able to be purchased at any/all locations (several hundred sites/plants to date). Is there an extension specific to having a Material master available for purchase, but not setting up stocking (most sites/plants want to be able to order as required, but not carry inventory).
