[sap-log-mm] MPN-MRP Sets

Hello Experts - I need some advice regarding the effectiveness/validity of using the MPN-MRP set solution for the following business process:

We are on ECC 6.0 Automotive Industry Solution (no EHP's as of yet);
We procure essentially(FFF) the same sub-material (steel) from several sources ;
We must inventory/valuate/procure these sub-materials via unique material master ID's due to VMI situations + batch management (ie., mat A, mat B, mat C);
To produce material D, we have multiple BOM's/production versions that use either mat A, B, or C; We need MRP to consider stock on all 3 materials A, B, & C before proposing replenishment.

Assuming the MPN-MRP set solution is the way to go, do I need to install the DI solution to enable it? If not, what is the alternative? If so, what are the other impacts of installing this industry solution?
