Some systems (we are on R3 4.7) are configured with T-Code AUT10 which is an audit T-code. We use this to do exactly as you describe, although, because of data volumes, we run Customer, Vendor and Material change reports separately. Effectively it is a report that looks at the CDHDR (change doc header) and CDPOS (change doc item) tables (as Ha Tran suggests above). So you need to ensure that your system is configured to record changes to master data into these tables - I think that Customer/Vendor/Material is SAP standard. When we run the report on material changes for a month it takes about a minute to run (8000 materials).

The beauty of it is that you can select by any combination of date, user, transaction code (that made the change), table (in which the change was made, field in the table (that was changed), change type (insert, update, delete). If you know the 'object' you want to look at (eg a material) you can look at all types of change to one or a range of objects - eg for material this is better than MM04 as you get a list of all changes in a table, with detail - who changed what, when and from which value to which value.

Also depending on what you have configured to be recorded as changes it can also look at other data - we often use ours to look at changes to sales orders, purchase orders, PIRs, etc.
